Palazzo Ducezio

Style and General Description

Palazzo Ducezio, the seat of the Municipality of Noto, is a historic 18th-century palace located along Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Its position facing the Cathedral of Noto symbolizes the harmony between political and religious power during the city’s reconstruction after the earthquake of 1693. The building features French architectural influences from the 17th century, with a portico, Ionic columns, and a convex central part.

Features and Curiosities

The name “Ducezio” is linked to Ducezio, the leader of the Siculi in the 5th century BC, who is said to have founded Neas, the ancient name of Noto. The “Salone degli Specchi” (Hall of Mirrors) is a highlight of the palace, decorated with mirrors, stuccoes, and decorations in the Louis XV style. This oval room features a fresco titled “The Foundation of Neas” painted by Antonino Mazza in 1826, depicting Ducezio and the creation of Noto.
